Program Characteristics/Degree Programs (top)

IS Degrees:

We also offer a number of other joint degree programs at various levels with Rutgers University and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (and have various joint research efforts).

We offer most degrees through our distance education program, which includes a large amount of class discussion and interaction in a structured computer conferencing environment. NJIT has been a pioneer in distance education, and holds the copyright for the term "Virtual Classroom."

We are in the qualification process as a Carnegie Classification "Extensive Doctoral/Research University" this year, which is their most prestigious classification.

NJIT has a very strong reputation in New Jersey, graduating about 1/4 of all engineers in the state.

Campus Characteristics (top)

Business School: Yes (but separate from our school); Also, Rutgers University across the street has a School of Management.

Number of students in College (CS/IS combined): 2,900

Number of Ph.D. students in IS Department (full and part time): 50

Number of students on Campus: 9,000

Primarily evening classes for graduate courses.

We have a great 3-story gym facility with a nice-sized pool (with free kayaking lessons one night a week), racquetball courts, basketball courts, and a great exercise machine room surrounded by an indoor running track. We also have outdoor tennis courts (soon to be covered). All facilities are free of charge.

IS Outside of a Business School (top)

The field of Information Systems concerns the effective use of information technologies. IS and IT can be applied to many different domains: business, education and learning, medical, community support, engineering, science, liberal arts, agriculture, etc. Thus while we have courses and conduct research in the areas with a traditional MIS focus, several courses and much research applies IS theories, development and evaluation beyond the business arena.

NJIT also has an IS group inside the School of Management. We do work closely with them, with cross-listed courses, research collaboration and joint facutly appointments. We also work closely with Rutgers School of Management, teaching several courses for them and advising some of their IS Ph.D. students.

College Structure (top)

The College of Computing Sciences was formed on July 1st, 2001 out of a very large CIS Department, which had been in the College of Science and Liberal Arts (CSLA). The new College has two departments: Information Systems and Computer Science. NJIT has 5 other colleges: CSLA, School of Management, Engineering, Architecture and the Albert Dorman Honors College.

Location, Location, Location (top)

NJIT is located 15 minutes from New York City by train. Our IS program is one of the largest in the New York metropolitan area. The area has a high concentration of industry and businesses, with many opportunities for research collaboration and consulting. Many of our students work for major corporations in the area.

The area offers a variety of living environments from lively urban (New York, Hoboken) to quiet suburbs with excellent school districts (within a 10 minute drive), to hills, farmland and to the shore (1 hour drive).

Research Infrastructure (top)

NJIT has several laboratory facilities. The IS Department has three research labs, including a new Collaborative Hypermedia and Application Development Lab and the new electronic ARTs habitat (eARTh) Lab.

We are an Internet 2 university.

NJIT has a lot of research collaboration across departments and schools. In addition, being located in the metro-New York area gives us access to many companies and industries on both sides of the Hudson River. Industrial-partnering for research is both feasible and encouraged.

Besides a large number of Ph.D. students, we have an abundance of masters students and undergraduates. Each masters student and undergraduate must do a Masters or Senior Programming Project, or attend two advanced seminars. This provides a lot of opportunities for students to help out on semester-long programming projects and gain experience with research projects. Faculty in both the IS and CS departments have the possibility to advise Masters and Ph.D. students from either department.

Most Wired US Public University (top)

Most Wired US Public University: For a number of years, Yahoo! Internet Life magazine has named NJIT as the "most wired" public university in the United States in its annual ranking, and the 3rd most wired technological university in the US overall. Students and faculty have access to wireless connectivity anywhere on campus which may be leading us to the new label of the Most Unwired US Public University.
