BAIS: Online After Taking Preparatory Courses

The BA IS degree is not fully online for all students.  You must have taken certain preparatory courses elsewhere, and then you will be able to complete the degree online through NJIT.  Many transfer students will be able to do the degree entirely online.

Studying Online at NJIT

  • Degree requirements remain the same regardless of course format or student status.
  • Courses at NJIT are offered in various formats: online, on-campus (traditional classroom) and hybrid (part online and part on-campus).  All formats for a courses have similar content, rigor and quality.   Course activities may be adjusted to best fit the format's opportunities.
  • Any student may take courses in any format.  (International students in the United States may be limited to a certain number of online courses in any semester.)
  • Specific courses may not be offered online, or be offered online with varying frequency.  Thus completing a degree online may have limitations. We recommend you consult with the undergraduate advisor to plan an optimal schedule.
  • Co-op: Single co-ops as well as the entire Co-op Path may be done entirely online, with the undergraduate advisor's guidance.

    • Preparatory courses which are not available online at NJIT.  (You can take these on-campus at NJIT or elsewhere.)

    • Preparatory courses which are available online at NJIT.   (You can take these at NJIT or the equivalent course elsewhere.)

    • Upper-division courses which are available online at NJIT.  These are 300 and 400 level courses.  (You must take at least 11 upper-division courses, i.e., 33 credits, at NJIT to graduate.)

  • Course listings in the table indicate either NJIT course numbers or more general titles. 
  • Course prefixes and abbreviations are listed below the table.

  • a programming course equivalent to CS 113 or CS 115

  • 2 additional computing or programming classes

  • 2 English composition courses equivalent to Hum 101 and Hum 102

  • General calculus 1 and 2

  • Probability and statistics

  • Science with a lab

  • Science (lab optional)

  • IS 245 or Operating systems

  • 2 free electives (100 or 200 level - these may possibly be available at NJIT, such as Hum 211 or Hum 212 or Hist 213, or others)

  • 2 accounting courses (part of the IS Application Environment)

The following courses are exempted from the degree:

  • NJIT's Freshman Seminar
  • Physical education (only required for full-time on-campus students)
